The 200 titles in this series were all published in 2006. The General Editor is Kuang Yaming, the late Honorary President of Nanjing University. This collection is the fruit of the largest research project on Chinese thought that started in the 1980s. It selected 273 outstanding figures, including politicians, generals, monks, philosophers, historians, writers, artists, and scientists, of the period from the end of Spring and Autumn Period (around 476 BC) to the beginning of the 20th century. In these works that met rigorous academic standards, scholars wrote biographies of influential thinkers and criticized their intellectual accomplishments.
